It may be a good time to explain how our cover is often selected. Larry usually selects several vertical compositions as possibilities and sends then to Ken Edwards, our associate art director. Ken will do a quick mock-up and sends them to Kathy and Larry. Ken offers his opinion and that leaves Kathy and Larry confused and still undecided. We will bring in our staff and friends, giving our opinions such as “our last five covers have been mammals, so we need to consider fish or birds.” This time this beautiful group/family of bee eaters received the cover for its composition, beauty, and difficulty. The mount was completed by Jan Fredriksson from Byurholm, Sweden, and was entered at this year’s World Taxidermy Championships®. It was entered in the Master Division Non-Game Bird Group, subcategory (8d) and received a third-place ribbon. This was a very competitive category, with his friends, Lennart Petterson (Sweden) winning first and Christel Van Ommen Verdaasdonk (Netherlands) placing second. It was a very tough decision for us, but the birds, colors, and composition was a showstopper and made for a beautiful cover.
